Two Proudly South African Teas, One Important Distinction
If you’ve ever mistaken Honeybush tea for Rooibos, you’re not alone. They share a few things in common: both are naturally caffeine-free, antioxidant-rich, and indigenous to South Africa. But despite these similarities, they’re two distinct herbal teas – and each offers a unique taste, history, and experience.
🌿 Different Plants, Different Profiles
The biggest difference starts at the root – quite literally.
-
Rooibos (pronounced ROY-boss) comes from the Aspalathus linearis plant.
-
Honeybush is made from Cyclopia species – althou there are 23 known species only a selected few are used for tea production. Cyclopia intermedia, C. subternata, and C. longifolia, C. genistoides and C. maculata.
☕ Taste Comparison
-
Honeybush tea has a naturally sweet, floral aroma, with soft honey-like undertones, making it delightful even without any sweeteners.
-
Rooibos tea tends to be more earthy, with a rich, nutty base and subtle vanilla notes.
📍 Grown in Different Regions
While both plants thrive in the Cape provinces:
-
Rooibos grows mainly in the Cederberg region of the Western Cape.
-
Honeybush is found further south in the Fynbos biome of the Eastern and Southern Cape, including places like Langkloof and Tsitsikamma.
💡 Different Uses, Similar Benefits
Both teas are known for their antioxidant content and can be enjoyed hot or cold, pure or blended. But Honeybush is still a hidden gem – with smaller production and growing global interest. That means by choosing Honeybush, you’re not only enjoying a unique tea, but also supporting smaller, local producers and biodiversity in South Africa.
🌼 Why Knowing the Difference Matters
As interest in herbal teas grows globally, we believe it’s important to celebrate and share the distinct identities of our local herbal heroes. Helping people understand that Honeybush is not Rooibos, but something equally special, is part of our mission at SAHTA.
