Meet Mirl Cunningham, SAHTA Director – Membership Portfolio & Traditional Knowledge Committee

I became involved in the Honeybush industry after relocating from Cape Town to the Tsitsikamma area nearly 28 years ago. Each spring, I was drawn to the vibrant yellow slopes that colored the mountains — a sight that captivated my curiosity. I later learned from the local community that this beautiful plant was known as “bossie tee” or “Johanna tee,” and I’ve been passionate about Honeybush ever since.

I am a business-minded individual with a strong belief in perseverance. Within SAHTA, I manage the Membership Portfolio and assist in the Finance Department. I also serve on the Traditional Knowledge (TK) Portfolio Committee, where we focus on preserving cultural knowledge and ensuring inclusive participation within the industry.

A personal milestone has been contributing to increased awareness around Honeybush through creativity and community engagement. I’ve developed a range of Honeybush-infused products — from oat crunchies and festive gift baskets to curated pairings with fynbos honey — all aimed at showcasing the versatility of this unique plant. I’m particularly passionate about involving youth in the industry and creating platforms where knowledge can be transferred to the next generation.

Looking ahead, my goal for the remainder of 2025 is to help strengthen the Honeybush industry’s visibility and impact, ensuring it is recognised as a significant and sustainable contributor to South Africa’s biodiversity economy.

My hope is for the industry to grow into a household name — known not just for its tea, but for its broader value as a health-forward, locally rooted product that offers economic opportunity and cultural pride.

When it comes to education and conservation, I believe schools can play a key role. Hosting experiential tours for learners — especially from Grade 7 and up — at Honeybush farms or processing sites can be a meaningful way to expose them to the industry. Universities, on the other hand, can support the sector through scholarships, research, and youth development  initiatives that ensure the continued evolution and sustainability of Honeybush in South Africa.
