Thornham Honeybush recently welcomed the enthusiastic Grade 7 learners from Johan Huss Primary School for an educational and interactive journey into the world of Honeybush.

This hands-on session introduced learners to the full lifecycle of the Honeybush plant – from seed to cup. It began with a demonstration on the importance of sterilising seedling trays and hand-sifting the growing medium, emphasizing the precision and care that goes into successful cultivation. The learners were also guided through the process of sowing seeds, gaining an appreciation for the work that begins long before the first brew is poured.

A key highlight was learning to identify and differentiate between two significant species of Honeybush: Cyclopia longifolia and Cyclopia subternata. Learners examined seed pods, compared textures, and engaged in discussion about the unique traits of each plant.

The session concluded with a warm tasting of freshly brewed Honeybush tea. For many, it was their first encounter with this indigenous treasure – a moment of discovery and delight.

By opening its doors to young learners, Thornham Honeybush is helping nurture a deeper connection with indigenous plants, sustainable farming, and local heritage. It was more than just a tour – it was an invitation to see the world of agriculture through a new lens.

We celebrate this initiative and the important work being done to educate and inspire future custodians of our natural resources.
